Senior Citizen Targeted in "Grandson" Scam at Rossmoor, Walnut Creek
A senior resident at Rossmoor in Walnut Creek fell victim to the "grandson" scam for the second time in four months. A caller, impersonating the victim's grandson, claimed to be in jail and needed bail money, resulting in the victim losing $12,500. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and verification to protect against fraudulent schemes targeting the elderly.

For the second occasion within a span of four months, a senior citizen residing at Rossmoor in Walnut Creek has fallen prey to the nefarious "grandson" scam. This fraudulent scheme, which specifically targets the elderly, involves a caller masquerading as the victim's grandson and fabricating a distressing narrative about being incarcerated and urgently needing bail money. The latest incident culminated in the victim being defrauded of a staggering sum of $12,500.

The scam ensued when the victim received a perturbing phone call from an individual who bore a striking vocal resemblance to her grandson. The impersonator, feigning to be the grandson, concocted a tale about being involved in a vehicular accident whilst using his mobile phone, which ostensibly resulted in his arrest. To augment the plausibility of the ruse, the scammer introduced an accomplice who impersonated a legal attorney, further legitimizing the deceit.

The purported attorney conveyed to the victim that a sum of $7,500 in cash was requisite for bail. Adhering to the provided instructions, the victim meticulously wrapped the cash in a box ensconced in wrapping paper and handed it over to a courier who arrived at Rossmoor, a gated community for adults. Notwithstanding the community's gate policy, which necessitates the scanning of driver's licenses, the courier was inexplicably granted entry sans providing a last name.

Several hours subsequent to the initial call, the victim received another communication, this time soliciting an additional $5,000. The caller alleged that the vehicle involved in the accident sustained a fractured windshield and other damages, insinuating that the supplementary funds would ameliorate these expenses. The victim, still credulous of the fabricated story, complied and withdrew the cash from her banking institution.

On both occasions, the bank endeavored to intervene, querying the sizeable cash withdrawals. The victim, in compliance with the scammer's directives, fabricated a narrative about embarking on a trip to France to justify the withdrawals. During the second withdrawal, a bank employee even ensured that the victim's spouse was present, manifesting genuine concern for her well-being.

This incident is not an isolated occurrence at Rossmoor. In late September, another resident incurred a loss of nearly $50,000 in a similar "grandson" scam. The victim deposited the purported bail money into a Coinme machine at a Safeway, only to have the funds transferred to the scammer's cryptocurrency account and vanish instantaneously.

The Rossmoor community has been profoundly shaken by these incidents. Residents are now exhibiting heightened vigilance, and the community's management has reiterated the significance of verifying the identity of anyone requesting monetary assistance or personal information. They have also furnished information to the Walnut Creek police, who are currently investigating the scams.

The Walnut Creek Police Department advises residents to exercise caution regarding urgent calls soliciting money and to verify the caller's identity by contacting other family members. They underscore the importance of refraining from sending money without proper verification and encourage residents to report any suspicious activities forthwith.

As the nation contends with an escalating number of scams targeting the elderly, it is imperative for communities to remain informed and vigilant. The emotional and financial toll on victims can be devastating, and it is crucial to disseminate awareness to avert further incidents. The Rossmoor community, in conjunction with law enforcement, is committed to safeguarding its residents and ensuring that such scams do not prevail in the future.
